Bradford City manager Graham Alexander has outlined his plans for managing his defensive unit through a busy schedule. The Bantams are currently 4th in the League One table with 9 points from five matches, a position they hold after a 1-0 victory over Mansfield Town this week.
Alexander explained that rotation in his three-man backline is set to continue. He brought Matt Pennington back into the side and handed a debut to Blackburn Rovers loanee George Pratt in their latest match, with Macaulay Gillesphey and Reece Welch moving to the bench. The manager said his decisions are based on player fitness data and recent injury history.
"We do look at the physical output of the players and their past history," Alexander said. He specifically mentioned Pennington's previous hamstring issue and noted Gillesphey had shown signs of fatigue. The manager added that full-back Ibby Touray is the only defender yet to receive a rest, calling him a "hardy boy and resilient." The club's next challenge is an away trip to face Notts County on September 12th.
Goalkeeper Harry Lewis, who was a late inclusion, received the highest mark of 9 for a series of important saves that kept his team in the game. His performance was central to securing the three points.
In defence, Deji Oshilaja and Ryan Sweeney were each given a rating of 7. Oshilaja was alert to danger but the back three lacked midfield protection in the first half. Sweeney was described as solid but occasionally exposed for pace before the game settled after the break. The win helped maintain Bradford City's positive goal difference of +1, having scored 5 and conceded 4 so far this season.
The team's early-season form has been strong, placing them firmly in the promotion conversation. They are just three points behind the current leaders, Sheffield Wednesday. Their record shows three wins and two losses from their opening five fixtures, a run of form captured as WLLWW.
Individual contributions are also being tracked. Key players like Antoni Sarcevic, who scored the winner against Mansfield, and Alex Baldwin have found the net already. For a full breakdown of individual performances, including assists and passing accuracy, fans can visit the club's stats page. The squad will need all contributors firing as they prepare for their upcoming fixtures, starting with the match at Meadow Lane.
